What is living city block?

Renewable demonstration project .

Good for economic development, Jobs and a better community.

Sustainability and prosperity

80% of pop will be living in city by 2050- have to fix city.

Commercial buildings

95% of the building stock is small to mid sized building. Consuming 44% of total energy.

The people working on LCB- they are working with

Experts, support , implementation

How it works?

Economy

Prosperity

People

health

ecology

all have to be sustainable and work together.

.

Activated Ally

A better place to live work and play.

Integrating systems into the natural system.

Big ideas: Mobility

  1. Create street spaces to support different mobility options (car, bike walk)
  2. Establish common payment methods for all transit/modes
  3. Reduces transit  method

re-establishing urban urban forest.

The world had ecological limits

Climate changes.

Our energy supply chain is lost and wasteful.

A little saved is a lots saved at the generational point.

Water supply is threatened

Landfills and oceans are overtaxed

Theoretical minimum- what do we need.

Build depending on what you need.

No lights in the day if the building was designed well.

To do this we need a whole systems approach

Integrative design= ongoing

Livability: measuring happiness

Multiple purposes to the design of the buildings.

EX: Desert living center.

Livability:

health

Open air.

Feel better.

Livability: economic

Five year payback on the living city block.

Green energy services

The right steps

  1. define needs
  2. maximize efficiency
  3. meet needs through passive design (it should be a functioning design without all the systems)
  4. meet the remaining load with efficient systems
  5. use waste energy  streams
  6. providing controls
  7. clean power/ carbon offset

green building services

-service analyses.

-energy consulting

living building-lessens learned

look at energy, exergy and watergy of each measure.

Don’t assume the simple measures- understand and apply

Exergy- the quality of energy. Exergy rich source

The energy of water.

Implementation lessons

1. Include the users and operators

2. Train the users

3. Commission

Lessons learned

Insulate the walls and the roof

Look at the glazing

Slab on grade need to be insulated

Look at shared resources

Passive building –active people (people have to be engaged)

Measure verify and track performance (share this info nationally)

.

look at the living city block as a system and not as parts.

In large areas

Geo energy services

Geo exchange systems

Two systems

Close loop systems

Underground – ground source heat system

Supply and return

2oo-400 ft.

possible for the sidewalks. (ground heat exchanger)

Not possible for the living city block – lack of footprint

Open loop system

Two holes

(technologies will be used at the state capital)

ground energy exchangers

open loop

well water is the most common sources

injected/rejected

complement all the other designs

heat rejection/ absorption

synergies

ex. Rainwater reclaim

thermal conductivity

related to the block

two deep wells

open loop system

one millions to put the system

a two year payback

empire state building

case study

expended ceilings

infinite air supply

electrical access

better view out of the building

why will this help people?

Performance enhancement

At us post office

High Performance from people

Terrapin bright green

Biophilia

1. Green helps people heal.

The people did hot heal that were exposed to a brick wall

The people that had a view of trees felt better

People need a direct hold of nature

2. Nature in space

  1. prospect
  2. what is the foam of this space.

Nature of the space.

Refuge perfected space

prospect

Refuge integrating them together

Savannah

In commercial space and res.  Institutional

Philological effect integrating plants inside

Water is seen in all of these systems

Storm water control system

Portland sustainable institute

Cross sector of business , government  and financial strategies

Three research to action

Policy innovation

Ecodistricts: neighborhood system  that is committed to sustainability

Rethinking the output

Community vitality

Engagement and governance

Changing your behavior to help sustainable

Spring 2010

Welcome to Spring 2010 CODEC students.

First Friday Gallery Space

Hey all… I hope Turkey Week was nice and relaxing for everyone. Here are images from the Artwork Network space. One possible projection area (possibly for a static projection rather than the interactive project) is above the stairs right in front of the door to the gallery (fig.1). The space downstairs is probably better for the interactive projection, we have the entire room(fig 2 and 3). I hope this gives you guys a good idea of the space we’re working with,  I have a few more images that I will bring tomorrow so we can start planning more concretely.

Theory, Mission and purpose

Theory: Children inevitably use their creativity to alter the world
around them through their imagination.

Mission: To generate a Cooperative environment where creativity is
cultivated through action.

The purpose: Create a space where children can have a hands-on
experience and explore their innate creativity while inventing an
interactive, three-dimensional installation using Open Source
programs.
